SHE SINGS WHILE SHE SPINS...

DJ Colette is one of the first DJs to add her vocals to the record she spins, inspiring a new category of performance in the electronic world. As countless others begin to sing and spin, many can still not compare to the vocal/turntable sessions Colette delivers. How many singing DJs combine up-close observation of the legendary Derrick Carter and Mark Farina dating back to Chicago in the late Eighties with formal operatic training from the ages of nine to eighteen? Probably not many. In fact, there may not be any DJ today who can match the impressive pedigree of former music teacher turned mix-master DJ Colette.

Having already displayed that pedigree in clubs and festivals throughout the world, both on her own and with the beloved SuperJane collective she helped form, Colette is ready to establish herself as an upper-echelon DJ with the release of her Nettwerk America debut 'Our Day'. Colette showcases that operatic training from the outset with the bluesy acapella intro/title track.

While the vocals add unmistakable flavor to the mix, the beats come fast and furious on this inviting CD that includes high-energy tracks from Wolf N Flow, Synthique, Colette's boyfriend, Angel Alanis, the can't miss club anthem "Under the Shower," featuring Colette's rising vocals over the Prax Paris original, and the percussion-rich Colette original, "Feelin' Hypnotized," which serves as a tantalizing teaser to Colette's first original artist album, which will be coming out on Nettwerk Records on November 20th.

Shut your eyes as you listen to Our Day and you'd swear Colette was right there spinning in front of you, which is exactly the effect she was striving for. "On most of the material I'm singing over it, so I kind of write new material that goes over other people's songs. That's what I do live. So I try and incorporate everything I do live into the mix CD."

Colette credits both her mixing style and her improvised vocals to coming up as part of the fertile Chicago house music scene at the turn of the Nineties. "I'm very spoiled because Derrick Carter and Mark Farina are the first DJs I got to hear growing up in Chicago. And I definitely learned how to spin watching people. Because at that time, unlike now, there weren't any classes, or people, that were willing to instruct you. I remember when I was 16 I used to watch Diz and Lego; I'd watch every little thing that they were doing and just kind of suck it in."

It was also at those house parties that Colette, a classical music student by day, began to find the liberation she still enjoys from singing over other people's records. "I started singing with house music when I was 16 or 17. I would go to parties and just freestyle over other DJs playing." That spontaneous approach, a dance music version of rapping, is something that has stuck with her through the present. To Colette, there is no better rush than the one that comes from improvising in front of a room full of clubgoers. "It's very impromptu when I write a song over a record, cause a lot of times I'll buy the record that day and when I'm playing it out that's when I write the lyrics," she says laughing. "There's definitely something to be said for a practiced performance, but it's really freeing to just improvise. Because it's almost like you're one of the people in the party. It's just like dancing; you don't really have a set dance routine when you go out to a club; you just feel it and you react to it. And it's the same thing for me."

If the idea of writing lyrics in front of a crowded club sounds gutsy, it's even more impressive when you consider Colette was shy about the idea of spinning publicly until SuperJane mate DJ Heather forced her to overcome her fear. Though her fear came not just from shyness, but from what she felt was a late introduction to the decks. "Growing up in Chicago, everyone started when they were 12, so in high school and my first couple years of college, all of my friends were DJs, and were really accomplished DJs at that. I just had been buying all these records and then I decided to buy some decks just to play around. I never was planning on playing out because it just seemed too late in the game for me to do that, and also, a little bit intimidating," she recalls.

Because of her early fears about entering the DJ scene, Colette is happy and proud to be a role model for young girls who follow her lead. "There are people who ask me questions about spinning or about music and it's great for me to be able to help them. It makes me feel really good about it, because it's just continuation. And it's really nice because I've been meeting so many girls who are 15 or 16 and are spinning, and I think that's amazing," she says.

In addition to being a role model through her music, Colette extends herself to a variety of women's causes. Nearly half of her shows benefit breast cancer organizations or battered women's shelters. Having become increasingly in these types of events, she plans on starting her own charity sometime in the near future. Doing what she does best, she'll spin to raise money for a variety of women's organizations, with the proceeds from each show being split between worthy causes.

Colette's generous nature is something she tried, successfully, to imbue Our Day with. Like it's creator, the CD sings with warmth. "The CD is very summer-y, even though it's coming out in the fall. It's very warm and fun," she says, speaking from LA, where she moved little over a year ago. "With all the music that I've been making I've been really trying to focus on a lot of positive things, both sonically and lyrically."

Artist:STEVE PORTER A.K.A. Porterhouse, Sporter
When Warehouse 135 initiated its campaign to change the world…I mean elevate the clubbing scene by resurrecting the Underground, boy were they downright serious! Hosting events that deviated from the mainstream such as Diskoteca Deluxe Friday Night Live, Rewired, CTA's Peak of the Underground and rolling the DJ's booth's red carpet to our local DJs and Electronic artists who new damn well the true essence of the Underground – that probably was the music scene's breakthrough initiative of the year. Not only did it broaden the "music appreciation" of the Metro's hardcore clubbers but it made everyone aware that there's so much more in dance music than your usual "well-known, what-the-heck-as-long-as-it-makes-you-dance club hits".

And when DRIVEN & WAREHOUSE 135 brought in Superstar DJ and Producer STEVE PORTER last June 16, 2007, that entrenched equator-deep the groundwork for the sky-high flagpole that marked the ultimate rebirth of the Underground – pointing clearly to the direction of where the scene is heading!

Too bad I can't say much about STEVE PORTER but that - he's the bomb! Take the best Electro set you've ever heard in your life, increase the intensity a hundred notches higher, that's PORTERHOUSE for you, my dear. Funkin' dirty angst! His Big Room Electro, Techno and Progressive set with Break Beats for build-up was just plain electrifying! No wonder his tracks find their way into the record boxes of the likes of Sasha, Lee Burridge, Derrick Carter, Carl Cox, Sander Kleinenberg, Mark Farina and Paul Van Dyk. Porter's suave DJing style with an attitude created a magnetizing connection between him and the crowd. No wonder those crazy ones who were in the dancefloor never left their post, evidently drowning themselves in Porter's pure Underground sound! Well, that's what happens when you're dished out with prime grade porterhouse served bloody rare (wink, wink).

That wasn't all that highlighted the night. DAVID JACOB of NBK and KEE CLUB (Hong Kong) did an excellent job warming up the crowd with his wicked Electro Dub Tech beats. I could not think of a better DJ to open for Steve Porter! DRIVEN'S very own ALI NEPOMUCENO picked up flawlessly where Porter left and kept the party up and running with his Breakbeat, Progressive and Techno set. These world-class DJs most definitely received "the nod" from everyone in the venue.

To cut it short, ALL SYSTEMS GO: PORTERHOUSE was out-of-this-world crazy.

Muchos gracias to DOMINI PRIMERO and the brilliant team behind Driven Manila and Warehouse 135 for a very successful, cutting edge event. Kudos as well to the event's major sponsors WINSTON, CHIVAS and SMART GOLD. Till the next one.

The next generation of electronic music producers is gaining hold and leading the charge is DJ/production phenom STEVE PORTER. His prolific productions have garnered international attention and are propelling him into America’s future DJ-cum-producer star. Steve Porter is just released his first-ever mix compilation ‘PORTERHOUSE’ with 26 tracks melded together on 1xCD in his signature genre-defying, pulsating, energetic Porterhouse style. The album merges his DJing and production style with 9 of his own original tracks, further blurring the distinction between DJ and producer into one compelling artist to watch.

Once in a blue moon there comes along a prodigy that is noticed by the big guns and whose talent catapults them onto the world stage. Something of a child prodigy from a famous scientist father, Steve’s first love was discovering electronic sounds at 16 years old. From Boston to New York, Steve Porter has evolved from record store clerk, mobile DJ to New England rave DJ to landing on the roster at one of the most prestigious booking agencies in the world. Steve Porter was discovered by Chris Fortier when Chris heard a CDR of his productions in 1999. Chris quickly brought him into the FADE Records fold. Soon thereafter, Steve was signed as the youngest member to join The Collective Agency; home to Sasha, U.N.K.L.E., and Lee Burridge. He began touring across the U.S., Canada, South America, Australia, Asia and Europe and has played alongside Sasha on the Airdrawndagger & Involver North American tours, Sander Kleinenberg on the Essential Mix Tour and also headlining a hectic schedule of national and international DJ dates.

Over the last six years, Steve has amassed a wide portfolio of over 70 singles and 28 remixes under his name and the many aliases (Agent 001, HDF & Bons) used to suit the mood of the song. His myriad of tracks have been dominating dancefloors globally with the versatility of Porterhouse finding its way into the record boxes of everyone from Sasha, Lee Burridge, Derrick Carter, Carl Cox, Sander Kleinenberg, Mark Farina and Paul van Dyk. Steve’s debut artist album ‘Homegrown’ released in 2005 on Fade Records is an amalgam of his various unique styles and melodic nuances. The expertly mixed album brings together 14 original tracks. Some of which have already garnered wide attention with inclusion of the tracks on numerous high-profile dance music labels & compilations including; "Vodka Cranberries" on hot new label Nu Republic, "Definite Form" on Sander Kleinenberg’s Little Mountain Records and included on his recent Everybody CD for Renaissance, and most recently, the track “Swanky” has been included on ool Felix da Housecat’s upcoming Playboy: The Mansion compilation.

The essence of Porterhouse brings the energetic action to the dancefloor where the warm, funky basslines and cool percussion melt away any chin stroking pretensions and the resonating guitar & piano hooks lure you into an eternal groove. Make no mistake, Porterhouse is PARTY house.

Artist:LEE BURRIDGE A.K.A TYRANT
In the decade that has passed since Lee Burridge discovered acid house music, raided the local record shops of Bournemouth and took to the decks, his illustrious DJ career has spanned at least three continents and seen him work alongside some of the England's most revered DJ's.

In 1991 the South Coast scene was no match for Lee's decksterous talents and Hong Kong beckoned with the promise of a residency that would put Hong Kong on the clubbing map. Six years later, the undisputed King of the colony was guesting at most of the big club tour parties in Hong Kong, including Cream, Ministry, Malibu Stacey and Northern Exposure.

In 1993 Lee turned his attentions to the now legendary full moon parties at Ko Pha Ngan, Thailand, with his residency at the back-yard club providing an inspirational alternative to the more standard nights around.

Future projects already promise to launch Lee into the DJing stratosphere and confirm his position as a face to watch on the scene. His residencies at Tyrant, both at The Bomb and Fabric, Golden and Cream continues to provide clubbers with the slick, hard, deep house, trancey, breakbeat sounds they have come to expect from him and his guest appearances at Gatecrasher, Sugarshack, United, Rhumba and Kelly's Port Rush have introduced his style to club goers all over the country. Last year Lee broadened his DJ diary horizons to take in Thailand, Ireland, South America, Ibiza, Israel and Hong Kong where international club goers have voted with their feet for Lee's driving progressive style. 2000 will see him play in Greece, Ibiza, the States, Brazil and undertake an Asian tour.

In 1999 Lee honed his studio techniques with the release of his mix CD "Metropolis" (released on Tide), which received the Compilation of The Month thumbs up in Muzik. Future projects in the pipeline include collaborations with Breeder and Hybrid, a breakbeat track with Andy Page (who previously collaborated with Sasha), and various other remix projects including work for several other labels.

With 1999 already a distant memory, the accolades Lee received - a new entry o no. 33 in DJ Magazine's Top 100 DJ Poll, Muzik's DJ Of The Month and Mixmag's Best Up & Coming DJ, are the perfect platform to consolidate his rise in 2000 with the launch of his monthly Tyrant night with Craig Richards at Fabric and the launch of the Tyrant Compilation series on Distinctive Breaks which will showcase Lee & Craig Richards legendary DJ sets as previously seen at Space in Ibiza and The Bonaparte at the last two Notting Hill Carnivals.

The Tyrant series is set to kick off in May with a series of parties stretching the breadth of the country surrounding the launch dates.

ReviewReviewReviewReviewReviewLIGHTS OUT! WITH STEVE LAWLERNov 9, '06 7:14 AM
for everyone
Category:Music
Genre: Dance & DJ
Artist:STEVE LAWLER (Global Underground)
Steve Lawler is a definitive DJ and producer; a tastemaker whose sets combine quality house music with the power to move dance floors around the world. In the last few years, he's wowed crowds in such far flung places as Zouk in Singapore, Groovejet in Miami, Twilo in New York and the mighty Space in Ibiza. Courtesy of home, he provided the most groundbreaking sets of the season for many of those lucky enough to hear him. After two months he had been crowned 'King Of Space' by the locals - a rare and well deserved honour.

You can find Steve behind the decks every Friday at Deep South @ home, where his 5 hour sets of twisted house are bringing a new lease of life to one of London's biggest clubs. As well as guest spots at every pioneering club in the UK from Renaissance to Bedrock.

If one person had to be singled out for Deep South's success it would be none other than top-class resident Steve Lawler. Whose mammoth five-hour sets of chunky house and intoxicating tribal progressive sounds have dragged him into the realms of the superstar DJ, and the club into one of the clubbing success stories of the year. But modest as ever, Steve puts it down to a combination of factors:

"I wouldn't accept that it's all down to me," understates Lawler. "There are a lot of people involved in making that night good. I just do what I do."

Steve Lawler hails from the Midlands, yet there is something distinctly non-territorial in his work. Although loving the atmosphere in the big Saturday nightclubs (he's an ex-resident at Cream), Lawler also refuses to pander to any punter wherever he's spinning, especially at home. Think DJ communism, with equal treatment for all the masses.

" It's rewarding for me to know that so many people are going off to underground music every Friday night across the country. Clubs like home and Renaissance have the best soundsystems and crowds in the UK, and the feeling you get from playing those nights is amazing".

Tuning into electronic music from an early age, Steve used to buy Depeche Mode records when he was young, so he obviously loved electronic sounds without even realising it. But it was acid house that really turned Steve on. Tuning avidly in to local pirate PCRL radio station gave Steve a taste for house music, and it wasn't long before his mates were luring him off to warehouse parties.

"I was totally blown away by the whole experience: the dark room, the strobes and the atmosphere. The whole thing just blew me away and inspired me to do my own parties."

Which is exactly what he did, putting on a series of illegal parties in a disused tunnel under the M42 between 1990-1994. "The last one was just amazing. We had Tony de Vit playing, and it had just grown from this small party to this huge thing - basically a rave. It was all about town the day before, people running around Birmingham going 'The tunnel's on, the tunnel's on.'"

But it was in Ibiza that Lawler got his first true break. Having earned his Ibiza stripes - he's been every year since 1990 through to 1997 it was finally Steve's chance to prove himself as an accomplished DJ. He was a resident at Café Mambo, spinning his legendary 8 hour sets there every day, as well as playing three times a week at Pacha. It was then he was spotted by Darren Hughes, then of Cream, who recognised his talent and ambition to succeed. Signing him up to Cream's DJing agency, he began a residency at the eponymous Liverpool institution. At only his second date at the club he had to follow Paul Oakenfold at their NYE party. Not an easy feat, but one which Lawler coped with admirably. The rest, as they say, is history?

It's not all about DJing though. Lawler's accomplished production, under the monikers of Novocane, Chameleon and, naturally, Steve Lawler, are currently causing mayhem amongst the likes of Tenaglia, Tong, Sasha, Digweed, Deep Dish, and Pete Heller. 'Rise In', his latest single, is a self-assured cut of heavy dancefloor pressure, which, as with all the best things, has simplicity as its key. Watch it drop on any dancefloor in the world and you realise that Lawler, in his production as much as his DJing, understands how to work a crowd. 'Rise In' is set for a September release, and if you've been near any of the coolest dance floors on the planet, you'll have realised just how special the track is. The buzz around the tune has superceded any of this summer's releases, and the Top 20 beckons. Who'd have thought proper house music would once again reach such heights? But then, as most of you know, Lawler is something very special.

"First and foremost I am a DJ," explains Steve. "I am not making records for a career or the money, it's just that I want to make my own version of sounds that would go down well in a club. When I make music I sit there and close my eyes and imagine being on a dancefloor, with the lights and the soundsytem. It's hard to get right all the time, but I'm going to keep banging away at it until I do".

Which is pretty much Steve Lawler for you. A hardworking Midlands lad who has never taken the easy path to success. From his mammoth sets at Space in Ibiza, or his tendency to re-edit half the tracks in his box, Steve certainly knows the meaning of graft:

"I do a lot of my own re-edits, because I get sent so many records where its all good and then some horrible break kicks in. So I just cut that bit out, get it on to CD and then go and get a slate cut. It's the way forward. It means that a lot of records that people might have, I have my own versions of them. It makes it unique, which you have to do these days. There's 1001 DJs out there. It's probably one of the reasons why I have actually got somewhere? I do make the effort."

Steve's spun at every club in Ibiza, and every decent club in the world, and has stunned all detractors of the progressive sound. He was described in The Face as, "The UK's Tenaglia", and in Jockey Slut as "one of the best dj's in the world".

Steve Lawler: the pioneer of twisted house who loves a bit of hard work. If you were waiting for a change of musical tack, then follow Lawler's lead. Don't be left behind!

ReviewReviewReviewReviewReviewGET SALTED WITH MIGUEL MIGS!Nov 9, '06 7:09 AM

Category:Music
Genre: Dance & DJ
Artist:MIGUEL MIGS a.k.a PETALPUSHER
At the forefront of dance music's deeper realm stands Miguel Migs personifying the chilled-out, soul-driven vibe of the Naked Music concept. Combining the best of both the electronic music world, with live instrumentation to create an organic-soulful sound to his original productions and remixes.

His remix of the Naked music single, "If I Fall", was the smooth, groove-infected track that first intertwined Miguel and Naked Music. His productions have been found slipping their way onto numerous compilations and sliding into the record bags of top deep house DJs across the globe. Miguel has since found himself on the remixer A-list of dance music's top record labels and producers.

Contrary to many of his club-o-centric DJ/producer peers, Miguel is unabashedly not always concerned with the potential dance floor appeal of his soulful, uplifting tracks. "It's music you can enjoy and listen to at home or in the club, not necessarily just to rock the dance floor at its peak," explains the Northern California native, who grew up with a true love of reggae, soul, classic rock, R&B, jazz, punk and hip-hop.

In the past few years alone, Miguel has quietly put out more than 90 quality, original cuts and remixes on seminal independent labels like Naked Music, Yoshitoshi, NRK, Black Vinyl, Large, Chez, and Transport. All of which have made waves in the underground circuit and hit DJ hype charts of international media. Not to mention his remixes for major label artists like Macey Gray, Lionel Ritchie and Brittany Spears.

A musician at heart, Miguels professional career started at age 18 as songwriter and lead guitarist for Santa Cruz local dub band Zion Sounds, whose Jamaican and African rhythms earned them gigs with globally known reggae outfits Culture and Burning Spear among others. The band parted in the mid 90's due to personal differences. Miguel then put his focus and creative energy into experimenting with the production of electronic music.

Conveniently, Miguel was situated just two hours away from North American club-love mecca San Francisco, in whose arms he discovered an intense musical passion that he could express alone in a studio: the feeling of house, and electronic music. "I was instantly hooked on the sounds of deep, soulful house music from the first time I heard it in the early 90's", explains Migs. "It was a beautiful feeling I got from the music, a very positive inspiration".

As a producer, Miguel perceives a strong connection between his house productions and reggae roots. Reflecting on his live musical background, he writes his own lyrics and plays his own instruments, be it guitar, bass, percussion or keyboard.

As a DJ Miguel maintains the same elements to his sets, as to his productions. Combining a variety of influences and styles fused together. Funky, Deep, soulful, bumping house music. "I like to mix it up and keep it moving, taking the crowd on a very spontaneous journey into the realms of quality, deep house music depending on the mood in the room", says Migs. "But, whether it's vocal, tracky, dubby, moody, percussive, broken beat or whatever, it just has to be very soulful, and funky with emotional content."

Miguel currently can be found regularly travelling the globe as one of the industries top-leading DJ's, as well as at home in the studio creating music, which is his main love and passion. "It's all about the balance between the traveling, studio and everything else in life", says Migs, "music has no limits or boundries and I get inspired by everything around me!"?? Nuff said!

ReviewReviewReviewReviewReviewThe Thrillseekers Oct 11, '06 1:10 AM
for everyone
Category:Music
Genre: Dance & DJ
Artist:Steve Helstrip
The Thrillseekers aka Steve Helstrip has been at the very forefront of the trance scene for over 5 years now. From his 2003 Hydra project and recent Ferry Corsten collaboration 'Sublime', back to the legendary - The Thrillseekers 'Synaesthesia', he has produced a powerhouse of hugely emotive music.

Steve started out making trance music while working for the computer games developer, Manic Media. Whilst living in Chipping Norton, on the Oxfordshire border, with a relatively basic home studio he constructed the milestone that is The Thrillseekers - 'Synaesthesia'. Signed and released by Neo Records at the height of the 1998 trance boom, it went on to sell over 12,000 copies on its initial UK release.

With its vibe on the subtler side of the genre it took more than a year to fully realise its own potential however and its path to eventual chart-success was assisted, in no small part, by Paul van Dyk. He took the record and gave it a six month long, gig in, gig out battering. The next year saw PVD sign it to his own Vandit label, remix it and with the inclusion of a vocal from Sheryl Dean it entered UK charts at number 27. As a standalone track it has rocked a million clubber's hearts across a hundred countries. It still appears in a huge cross-section of DJ's all-time top tens today.

Whilst still closeted in Chipping Norton, Steve took it upon himself to learn the art if DJ'ing. It was initially born out of a desire to see how his records worked in the mix with other tracks, and as a tool with which to improve their DJ properties. This quickly turned into a desire to see them, first hand, fire up a floor. Over the last four years Steve has played guest slots right across the globe, taking in some of the finest venues in each continent.

Steve was always one for quality over quantity and whilst his production peers belted out one sound-a-like track after another, he focused on creating a catalogue he would still be happy with in 20 years time. Following 'Synaesthesia' came 'Dreaming of You' which was released on the Ministry of Sound's Data label and in the UK alone, featured on 14 compilations last year.

In the intervening period Steve went on to launch a new moniker for MOS subsidiary, Incentive. En-Motion was born and with it came 'Truth' in 2000 and 'Getting Away With It' in 2002. In the adjoining years he also pushed forward with collaborations with Andy 'Pulser' Perring as Insigma ('Open Our Eyes'/'Avalon') and with ATCR owner Tim Stark under the name Rapid Eye ('Circa-Forever'/'Stealing Beauty').

Steve's remix career started pretty much the same day as 'Synaesthesia' was promo'ed. Since then he has revamped, remapped and reshaped in excess of thirty other artist's tracks. From Sonique to Sholan, from Tiesto to Timo Maas (twice!) and from Chicane to Cequenza, he has lent them all his awesomely melodic, electronic touch.

DJ'ing under the moniker "The Thrillseekers", Steve has played the globe over Germany, Finland, Denmark, America, Australia, and Japan in addition to securing high profile slot in the UK at the likes of Ministry Of Sound, Passion and Golden. In the process developing his ever-growing reputation as a DJ towards the level he is looked upon as a producer?arguably amongst the best in the world.
